About Peoples and Costume
European books described the peoples of the archipelago from the first voyages, at first by hearsay and later from life. The French and Dutch expeditions of the early 19th century brought artists who drew the people of Timor, Roti, Savu, Solor and Papua, their weapons, tools and textiles.
This collection holds the costume plates of Wahlen, Berghaus and Hardouin, Temminck's ethnographic plates, A. van Pers's lithographs of Javanese daily life, wayang puppets and gamelan instruments, and the plates of Javanese court dress and dance.

Questions
What are wayang?
The shadow and rod puppets of Javan theater, cut from leather or carved from wood, used to perform the Ramayana, Mahabharata and Javanese stories with a gamelan orchestra.
Are these ethnographic prints respectful?
They are records of how 18th and 19th century Europeans saw the peoples of the islands, with the accuracy and the prejudice of their time. The best, such as Temminck's, were drawn from life and objects.
