East Indies Maps and Prints

Place names, then and now

The maps and prints on this site use the names of their own time. The Dutch, French, English and German mapmakers of the 17th to the early 20th century spelled the places of the archipelago in many ways, and many towns and islands have had new names since Indonesian independence. This list joins the old names to the names used today. Search on this site understands both, so a search for Jakarta also finds the prints of Batavia.
