East Indies Maps and Prints

About this collection

East Indies Maps and Prints presents the maps and prints of the Dutch East Indies held by Bartele Gallery, a dealer in antique maps and prints in the Netherlands. The Dutch East Indies is the gallery's specialty. Bartele Gallery is the seller of every piece on this site.

For three and a half centuries the islands that are now Indonesia were mapped, charted and pictured by Dutch and other European mapmakers, engravers, naturalists and travelers. Their work is the visual history of the Dutch East Indies, from the first voyages of the 1590s and the Company's Batavia to the colonial Java of the 19th century and the plantations of Sumatra.

Every sheet here is a period original, printed in its own day and often colored by hand. The date given is the date the sheet was printed. Where a date is uncertain, we say so. The titles keep the old place names the maps use; each print's page gives the modern name, and the search understands both.

By island

Each print is also listed under the island group it shows: Java, Sumatra, Borneo, Celebes, Moluccas, Lesser Sunda, New Guinea. Maps of the whole archipelago, and portraits, are listed under their collection only.

Bartele Gallery was founded in Jakarta in 2009. I started it with my wife Roos, and today the gallery has two homes: the Hotel Indonesia Kempinski in Jakarta, and the historic village of Langweer in Friesland, the Netherlands, where the main collection of more than 19,000 maps and prints is kept. Both are open by appointment.

Everything in the gallery is a period original, printed in its own day and never a reproduction. A certificate of authenticity is available on request. Bartele Gallery is a member of the NVvA, the Nederlandsche Vereeniging van Antiquaren, and through it of ILAB, and follows their standards for the trade.

Every piece is packed flat between rigid boards or rolled in a strong tube, and shipped insured and tracked anywhere in the world.
