About Towns and Landscapes
The towns of the Indies were drawn for European readers from the first voyages. Batavia appears again and again: as a plan, as a harbor full of ships, as a castle with its bastions, as a town of canals, churches and a town hall. Banten, Ambon, Makassar and Kupang follow.
In the 19th century the land itself became the subject. Abraham Salm's chromolithographs of 1872 show the volcanoes and highland roads of Java in full color, Perelaer's engravings of 1888 its towns and villages, and around 1900 Kleingrothe's photogravures record the new plantation world of East Sumatra.

Questions
What is a chromolithograph?
A print in color made from several lithographic stones, one for each color, printed one after another. Salm's views of Java of 1872 are a fine example.
Are the views of Batavia accurate?
The best are. Plans and views by Montanus, Valentijn and Van Krevelt were made from Dutch sources and show the real streets and buildings; later copies simplify them.
