Lesser Sunda in maps and prints
The chain of islands east of Java was where Dutch and Portuguese ships met, and Timor stayed divided between them. The first Dutch voyage to reach Bali, in 1597, produced some of the earliest European pictures of the island.
The French expedition of Freycinet in 1818 and the plates of Temminck's Verhandelingen around 1840 recorded the peoples of Timor, Roti, Savu and Solor, their weapons, textiles and houses.
