About the Company
The Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie, founded in 1602, was one of the first companies with shares traded on a stock exchange, and for almost two centuries the ruler of the Dutch East Indies. Its history was written in prints: the fleets leaving for the East, the battles with the Portuguese, English and Indonesian rulers, the forts it built and the men who governed it.
Valentijn's portraits of the Governors-General and his scenes of war and diplomacy are the core of this collection, with the castle of Batavia, the island of Onrust where the Company's ships were repaired, and the forts of Java, Ambon, Banda and Solor.
