Title: Antique Bullock's Heart Botanical Chromolithograph by Hoola van Nooten, c. 1880
Description:
A beautiful original antique botanical chromolithograph depicting Annona reticulata L., commonly known as Bullock's Heart, Custard Apple, or Ox Heart. One of the world's finest tropical fruits, Annona reticulata is admired for its distinctive heart-shaped fruit, creamy aromatic flesh, and elegant evergreen foliage. Native to the tropical Americas, it became widely cultivated throughout Southeast Asia, including Java, where it flourished in the warm climate.
The composition illustrates a fruiting branch bearing a mature Bullock's Heart together with detailed botanical studies of the fruit in section, flower, and seeds. The sculptural fruit and graceful foliage combine scientific precision with exceptional decorative appeal, making this one of the most attractive fruit plates from Berthe Hoola van Nooten's celebrated botanical masterpiece.
The artwork was painted from life on the island of Java by the distinguished Dutch botanical artist Berthe Hoola van Nooten (1817 to 1892). It was published in her masterpiece, Fleurs, Fruits et Feuillages Choisis de l'Ile de Java, widely regarded as one of the finest nineteenth-century botanical publications devoted to the flora of the Dutch East Indies. Printed in rich chromolithography by P. De Pannemaeker of Ghent, this plate was issued in the third edition published in Brussels by Librairie Européenne C. Muquardt around 1880.
Bullock's Heart remains one of the most prized tropical fruits throughout Asia, the Caribbean, and South America. Its unusual form and sweet, custard-like flesh have made it a favorite among botanists, gardeners, and collectors alike. This original antique print combines botanical importance with timeless decorative appeal.
This is an original antique print, printed circa 1880, and not a modern reproduction or later copy.
