Medan Station, Antique Photogravure by C.J. Kleingrothe, Sumatra c.1900
This original early 20th-century photogravure depicts Medan Station in North Sumatra during the period of rapid colonial development in the Dutch East Indies. Created by photographer C.J. Kleingrothe, who operated his photographic studio in Medan from the 1890s, this work documents the railway infrastructure that supported the booming plantation economy in Deli.
The image provides a detailed elevated view over railway tracks, station structures, and surrounding tropical landscape. Palm trees and dense vegetation frame the industrial scene, offering an important historical contrast between modern transport expansion and the natural environment of Sumatra. Kleingrothe’s works are admired for their technical quality and documentary importance, serving as a visual record of the transformation of Southeast Asia under Dutch administration.
This print is highly collectable for those interested in colonial history, transportation development, Southeast Asian photography, and Indonesian cultural heritage. It presents exceptionally well when framed and can serve as a striking feature in a home or office with themes of travel, history, and exploration.
Framing tips: Recommended in a natural dark wooden frame or black frame with a warm archival mat to complement the historic tonality and draw attention to the scene.
